Introduction:
As Engineer in Charge of the CERN Proton Synchrotron ( PS ), you will contribute to the safe, efficient and performance-driven operation of the accelerator, combining operational follow up, technical problem solving, performance analysis and software development.

You will play an active role in improving PS operation through data driven analysis, high level control applications and automation-oriented developments, with the aim of making operation more robust, reproducible and efficient.

Functions:

• Take an active role in the safe, efficient and performance-driven operation of the PS and its associated beam lines during commissioning, regular operation, and machine development studies.
• Analyse PS operational issues, assess their impact on beam performance and availability, and collaborate with equipment experts, controls specialists and operations teams to define and implement effective solutions.
• Drive automation-oriented developments for PS operation by identifying operational processes that can be made more robust, reproducible and efficient, and translating them into tools, procedures and applications that increase the autonomy of the accelerator.
• Drive the performance optimisation of the PS beams for the LHC and the fixed target facilities, combining accelerator studies, operational data analysis and close collaboration with operations crews, machine experts and physics users.
• Prepare, validate and improve operational settings, procedures and diagnostics required for reliable and reproducible PS operation.
• Engage in cross-accelerator activities to share operational experience, promote synergies and develop common approaches for performance optimisation, software tools and automation, ensuring that best practices are transferred across CERN’s accelerator complex.
• Develop, maintain and improve software tools, high level control applications and data analysis workflows supporting performance optimisation and operational decision making.
• Propose, conduct and support machine development studies aimed at improving beam performance, operational efficiency and the understanding of PS limitations.
• Share the operational status, performance analyses and improvement activities through clear updates, presentations and reports.
• Identify and provide operational input for consolidation and upgrade activities, and future studies.
  
  

Qualifications

• Master's Degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics, Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

• Experience with accelerator operation or strong interest in developing a solid understanding of PS operation, accelerator systems and beam dynamics.
• Experience in performance analysis, optimisation and the development or improvement of operational tools, with the motivation to become a key technical reference for PS operation.
• Ability to understand and improve complex technical systems involving hardware, controls, software, operational constraints and beam performance aspects.
• Proficiency in software development with Python, combined with experience in data analysis, diagnostics, performance monitoring or operational decision support.
• Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to investigate technical issues, identify root causes and define pragmatic solutions in a complex operational environment.
• Motivation and ability to drive automation, high level control applications and data driven methods to make accelerator operation more robust, reproducible and efficient.
• Ability to work autonomously, take initiative and collaborate effectively with operations crews, equipment experts, controls specialists and other accelerator teams.
• Ability to communicate technical results clearly through status updates, reports and presentations.
• Knowledge of optimisation methods, feedback control or control algorithms would be an asset, in particular for applications to beam performance, automation or operational decision support.
• Experience with operation, commissioning, performance optimisation or troubleshooting of complex scientific, technical or industrial facilities would be an advantage.
• Knowledge of Java, accelerator controls, high level control applications or operational software would be an asset.

Employment Conditions:
