PhD scholarship in Computational Nanoelectronics Simulations - DTU Physics
Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)
We offer a PhD position in the field of theoretical nanoelectronics based on predictive first principles calculations. We target modelling and simulation of electron transport in large interfaces between twisted layers of ultra-thin oxide membranes and two-dimensional van der Waals materials. These interfaces give rise to large-scale moiré patterns and reconstructions which may host interesting and tuneable properties depending on twist-angle.
You will be part of a larger collaboration combining experiments and theory. Your task is to develop predictive models of the “Quantum Twisting Microscope” experiments, allowing for transport studies through the interface as a function of twisting angle in the interface. We will do this by employing Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) combined with Machine Learning (ML) based models to enable predictive calculations of experimentally relevant (large-scale) atomic structures. With this we aim at linking detailed atomistic and quantum descriptions with the measured quantities such as current-voltage characteristics.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in theoretical or computational condensed matter physics, experience with scientific programming and atomistic simulations, and an interest in DFT, electron transport, machine learning, and interaction with experimentalists. We value independence, curiosity, good collaboration skills, and the ability to communicate scientific results clearly in English.
Responsibilities and qualifications
- Predict interface atomic and electronic structure based on Density Functional Theory (DFT).
- Perform electron transport calculations using DFT combined with non-equilibrium Greens function methods.
- Use Machine Learning (ML) techniques to extend the DFT domain to experimentally relevant system sizes, e.g. predict large-scale moiré structures or dislocation networks.
- Develop multi-scale, first-principles-based computational workflows enabling screening calculations e.g. varying twist-angle, voltage bias, and gate potential.
- Collaborating with our project partners on interpreting experimental results.
- Contributing to development of open-source tools.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the candidates will be made by Prof. Mads Brandbyge and Prof. Nini Pryds.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 12 June 2026 (23:59 Danish time) . Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file . The file must include:
- A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
- Curriculum vitae
- Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale
You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.
Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
