Research Assistant in Educational Development of a Photonic Quantum Computing master course - DTU Physics

If you have a strong background in quantum information and/or quantum optics, and are dedicated to educating the next generation of quantum information scientists, here is your chance to have a lasting impact by helping develop an entirely new master-level course in photonic quantum computing.

DTU already has a strong palette of courses for quantum engineering. These are offered on the Engineering Physics master programme, as well as the Quantum Information Science master programme provided jointly with University of Copenhagen. One gap in the offering is the lack of an advanced course dedicated to quantum computing with photonic technologies. This is a highly relevant topic to teach given the large interest in quantum computing and Denmark’s stronghold in photonics. DTU Physics has therefore decided to develop such a course from scratch, and has obtained funds for it through DeiC’s Q-Competence initiative.

We are seeking a highly motivated physicist with an interest in educational development to design and build this course in close collaboration with professors in the QPIT section. We wish to make use of a diverse range of modern teaching methods, so this position will in particular involve writing, programming and making layouts for the teaching materials in the form of Jupyter notebooks or similar, which will be made public for others to use, as well as creating animations and videos. One component of the course will also involve remote-controlled experimentation on QPIT’s photonic hardware.

The course is planned to run for the first time in the autumn semester of 2027. The teaching itself will be done primarily by faculty. As such, there is no classroom teaching planned for this position, but it is nonetheless a possibility to teach one or more modules, should you have an interest in that.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You should have a background in quantum information science and/or quantum optics, as well as flair for communicating complex, technical subjects in an easily accessible and pedagogical way.

We expect you to be able to quickly learn new theoretical topics, to the level where you feel comfortable teaching these topics to students in a pedagogical, clear and rigorous writing style. It is an advantage if you can present examples of previous teaching or outreach, you have done. This could include public presentations, blog posts, open source code, etc.

You should be highly motivated for this type of educational work, which have similarities with research but is still quite different. No publications are anticipated, but the teaching material will be made openly and freely available, so you will still obtain a prominent and visible outcome of this time-limited position.

As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent. Please note, that if you have obtained a PhD degree, you are eligible to apply for our parallel job posting for a postdoc position (only one of these two positions will be filled).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is until 31. December 2027, and should begin as soon as possible.

The employment is full time, and salary and working conditions are according to the general agreement for state-employed academics.
