The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading NGOs, with a focus on responding to displacement, have been registered in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Port Sudan, and White Nile. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

Overall purpose of the role

Under the supervision of the Protection Manager, the Protection Officer will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and quality delivery of protection activities across South Kordofan. This includes components of case management, protection monitoring, and community-based protection. The Officer will work with vulnerable individuals and communities to reduce protection risks, strengthen community-based protection mechanisms, and ensure access to appropriate services. The Officer will contribute to data collection, awareness-raising, individual protection assistance referrals, and community engagement in line with DRC's protection standards and principles

Responsibilities:

Programme

• Implement protection monitoring activities, including data collection through FGDs, KIIs, observation, and incident recording using KoBo Toolbox across areas of intervention
• Conduct systematic outreach to identify individuals at heightened protection risk through field visits, community engagement, and coordination with other humanitarian actors.
• Provide case management support to vulnerable individuals, including comprehensive assessments, individualized action planning, referrals to internal and external services, and regular follow-ups.
• Deliver individual protection assistance (cash or in-kind) to mitigate specific risks faced by persons of concern, ensuring all processes are documented in accordance with DRC's data protection protocols, including consent forms, referral records, and case notes
• Lead the establishment, orientation, and capacity-building of Community-Based Protection Networks (CBPNs), including training on the Code of Conduct and PSEA
• Engage and coordinate CBPNs and Community Mobilizers in protection monitoring activities to collect qualitative and quantitative data on protection risks, and contribute to the drafting of regular protection monitoring reports.
• Ensure Community Volunteers (CoVs) and CBPNs remain active and functional through regular follow-up, meetings, awareness sessions, household visits, and community campaigns
• Facilitate PSS group sessions to promote mutual support, socialization and positive coping strategies
• Support the designing and delivery of psychoeducational awareness sessions (both content and materials) on psychosocial topics, including stress management, available mental health services, and coping skills
• Facilitate timely and appropriate referrals for individuals identified through outreach, with regular and systematized follow-up to ensure adequate service provision and identification of emerging trends.
• Conduct information dissemination, awareness and capacity-building activities with communities on protection risks, on rights and on available services among others, in safe and suitable locations.
• Perform any other duties related to the provision of protection services and assistance as directed by the Protection Manager

Monitoring and Reporting

• Produce accurate and timely weekly and monthly reports on all protection activities and submit them to the Protection Manager for review.
• Ensure proper archiving and filing of all activity reports, case files, and data records in both hard copy and digital formats, using designated platforms and shared drives
• Use all tools, forms, SOPs, and professional standards related to protection programming as communicated by the Protection Manager, and flag any gaps or challenges to supervisors promptly
• Ensure proper recording of complaints received through the feedback and accountability mechanism, and support timely follow-up and response .

Representation and coordination

• Represent DRC and the programme towards a wide range of stakeholders including individual beneficiaries, community mobilizers, and community-based structures’ members and focals points.
• Ensure all external representation upholds professional standards and transparent communication to build trust and effective collaboration with stakeholders
• Ensure that all interactions with person of concerns take place in an environment that respect and promote their safety, agency and dignity in accordance with protection and humanitarian principles

Operations support

• Support the coordination of programme support activities as they relate to logistics, administration or security as relevant, under the guidance and supervision of the Protection Team Leader and in coordination with the relevant departments. Comply with all relevant internal policies and directives.

Experience and technical competencies:

• 1-2 years of professional experience in the field of humanitarian interventions, social sciences, human rights or community development, preferably with an international humanitarian organization.
• Experience in provision of psychosocial support and community-based protection activities
• Knowledge of the humanitarian context in Sudan and of the issues related to conflict and displacement.

• Experience working with IDPs as well as refugees, particularly from South Sudan is desirable.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

University Certificate in the field psychology, social sciences, humanitarian affairs, international law, development or any other related field.

LANGUAGES

Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic
