DTU Tenure Track Researcher in Neutron Spectroscopy - Uniaxial Pressure Studies of Quantum Materials - DTU Physics

We are seeking a motivated researcher with a background in neutron scattering to join a joint DTU–ESS effort at the European Spallation Source (ESS).

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has been closely involved in the construction of the BIFROST spectrometer at ESS. With first experiments approaching, we are now looking for a postdoc to contribute to the early scientific program on the instrument.

The project focuses on the use of uniaxial pressure as a controlled way to perturb exchange interactions in quantum and functional materials. By combining uniaxial pressure with inelastic neutron scattering, subtle changes in the magnetic Hamiltonian can be probed and used to access new states of matter.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be employed by DTU and seconded to ESS, working closely with teams at both institutions as well as collaborators at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. On the technical side, you will contribute to developing uniaxial pressure capabilities for neutron spectroscopy at ESS, including extended research visits to PSI.

On the scientific side, your work will focus on frustrated magnetism in two main contexts:

• Quantum spin liquids, characterised by long-range entanglement, fractionalised excitations, and the absence of conventional order
• Frustrated multiferroics, where magnetic and electric order parameters are coupled

Your main tasks will include:

• Designing and developing in-situ uniaxial pressure cells, in collaboration with ESS and PSI.
• Planning and carrying out neutron spectroscopy experiments at facilities across Europe that showcase the technical and scientific capabilities of uniaxial pressure as applied to magnetic states of matter.
• Analysing data and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.

You should have:

• A PhD (or equivalent) in the physical sciences
• Experience with neutron spectroscopy,
• Experience with challenging sample environment
• A track record of peer-reviewed publications
• Programming skills in Python or Matlab
• The ability to work both independently and as part of large, international collaborations

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
