The Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMI), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, seeks to appoint a tenure‑track assistant professor or an associate professor to commence 1 March 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

BMI focuses on basic and translational biomedicine and the integration of these topics. The staff includes graduates in medicine, life and natural sciences, with interests spanning physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, and clinical medicine. The staff delivers high-quality, research-based, and clinically relevant pre- and postgraduate teaching on courses within biomedicine, physiology and pharmacology and supervises postgraduate students. A team of laboratory technicians and administrative staff supports the Department.

BMI prioritizes translational cardiometabolic research as a core strategic focus. Diseases like diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and heart failure create immense global health challenges, necessitating novel mechanistic insights and cutting-edge pharmacological solutions. BMI’s expertise in physiology, pharmacology, and cell- and animal-based models equips the Department to spearhead progress in these critical areas.

Modern cardiometabolic research spans fundamental studies of disease mechanisms as well as prevention and treatment. It integrates more effective lifestyle interventions with emerging pharmacological approaches and places mechanistic insights into drug–target interactions at the centre of innovation.

Appointing a tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor who can build a research group in this area in the department will contribute to BMI’s mission to connect molecular discovery with clinically relevant therapeutic innovation and deliver research that improves human cardiometabolic health.

General criteria apply to the appointment of tenure-track assistant professors and associate professors at the University of Copenhagen. Tenure‑track Assistant Professor

• PhD degree or equivalent
• High international research standing or potential, including publications and dissemination
• Proven ability to secure external funding is considered an advantage
• Teaching experience and participation in formal pedagogical training
• Experience of research-based innovation and or/societal impact incl.  knowledge‑sharing with wider society is considered an advantage
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in English

The tenure track assistant professor must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.

The tenure track assistant professor’s performance will be evaluated through annual evaluations. Furthermore, the tenure track assistant professor will be evaluated in a mid-track appraisal.

Associate Professor

• PhD degree or equivalent
• An internationally recognised research profile and high research impact, including publications and dissemination
• Solid research‑based teaching experience and participation in examination activities.
• Documented pedagogical competencies
• Documented research leadership and supervision experience
• Proven ability to secure external funding
• Documented societal engagement and academic citizenship
• Proven experience of research-based innovation and societal impact
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in English
• Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways

Responsibilities:

• The responsibilities of both tenure‑track assistant professor & associate professors are centered around the five areas research, teaching, innovation & societal impact, organisational contribution, and leadership described in the University criteria of merit .
• Research and publication/academic dissemination within translational cardiometabolic research and attracting external funding.
• Both tenure-track assistant professors and associate professors must be prepared to take on research‑based, student‑activating teaching, including examinations, within the Department’s portfolio that covers the areas of organ anatomy, histology, physiology, pharmacology and/or biochemistry.
• Tenure-track assistant professors must participate in a university pedagogical training programme.
• The University language policy states that both tenure-track assistant professors and associate professors are expected to obtain Danish language skills at a level where they are able to contribute to teaching in Danish after 3-6 years. This includes grading and supervising students at a level of skills that corresponds to the teaching they are to undertake. Read more about the University language policy here .

Terms of Employment:
The position is permanent; weekly working hours are 37 hours.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

Application Procedure:

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
