Hosting Team & Department
Coloplast R&D/Center of Excellence / engineering analysis. The student will be enrolled in the ongoing activities and discussions within the Simulation Team, focusing on virtual prototyping and modelling.

Project Description
Sealing performance is critical for maintaining a sterile barrier throughout production, use, and shelf life across a wide range of products. Engineers typically employ soft, rubber-like materials to seal gaps between rigid components. These compliant materials accommodate variations in part dimensions, surface conditions, and manufacturing imperfections, thereby ensuring a reliable seal.

The primary objective is to prevent leakage, and standardized laboratory test procedures are commonly used to evaluate new sealing designs. However, prototyping under realistic conditions is often time-consuming, and the resulting tests frequently yield binary outcomes: pass or fail. Such results offer limited insight into potential design risks or opportunities for optimization. Simulation models are essential for gaining a deeper understanding, yet a fundamental question remains: What defines an effective seal from a simulation perspective?

This project aims to establish best practices for evaluating seals between hard and soft materials using simulation techniques. Key parameters, such as minimum overlap, contact area, and sealing pressure, may influence sealing performance, but their relative importance is not yet fully understood.
This investigation will explore these factors systematically, with the goal of identifying the most critical design criteria for robust sealing solutions.

Preferred Competencies or Interests
Recommended prerequisites are:

• Hands-on experience with the Finite Element Methods (e.g. course 41525/41815 at DTU)
• Strength of material II (41502 at DTU, or similar)
• Programming experience with Matlab, fortran, or Python
