Team & role overview
We're Personalization - the team that keeps GoWish feeling alive. People come to us to create wishes, find the perfect gift, and discover things they didn't know they wanted. Our job is to make sure there's always a reason to come back. Put simply, we keep active users active.

Our work spans six areas: Gift Generator, Recommendations, Activity, Creators, Brands, and Partners. Together they shape almost everything a user sees and does on the platform.

As our new Backend Engineer, you'll build and own the services that power all of it — designing APIs and data flows that feel instant and personal at scale. You'll work closely with frontend, product, and data, with real ownership over how millions of people experience GoWish

Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and operate backend services using TypeScript and NestJS

• Build and evolve GraphQL APIs that internal teams and consumers

• Take ownership of services end-to-end, including architecture, deployments, monitoring, scaling — confirm scope

• Participate actively in architectural discussions, code reviews, and technical roadmap planning

What We’re Looking For

We imagine that you have:

• 5+ years as an Engineer with 3+ years owning backend systems.

• Strong experience with TypeScript

• Hands-on experience with NestJS

• Solid experience working with GraphQL

• Confident with Git and version control

• Experience working with APIs

• A good understanding of SQL

It is further seen as an advantage to have experience with:

• Google Cloud Platform

• PostgreSQL

• Docker

• Drizzle or other ORMs

• Datadog

We also imagine that you:

• Use AI as a tool — not as an autopilot. You stay critical of what AI hands you, and you never pass a PR along without having been through the code yourself. AI is a big part of our everyday, and it should be — but that takes knowing when and how it makes sense to lean on it.

• Communicate well about your work. We keep each other in the loop on what we’ve got going, far beyond standups. Coordination is a fixed part of the way we work.

• Have an eye for both the short and the long game. You can see what’s needed right now and what pays off down the line — and you know the two don’t always pull in the same direction.

• Are flexible and creative in your approach . You’re not locked into one particular way of coding or working. Wanting to do things properly is a good thing, but sometimes reality calls for a creative solution — and you’re ready to find it.

• Can stand on your own two feet when that’s what’s needed. We often pick up work as a whole team, but the tasks themselves usually sit with the individual developer. So we need to be able to count on you to carry a task all the way to the finish line: either solving it yourself or moving it forward so someone else can take over.
