Postdoc in software systems integration, modeling, and simulation for sustainable datacenter fleets - DTU Compute
Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)
A postdoc position is available in the Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE) section at DTU Compute. The position is part of AEGIS, Adaptive Grid-Interactive Edge Datacenter Fleets , a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network that DTU coordinates. In AEGIS, 10 partners and 15 PhD projects across Europe develop the methods that let fleets of edge datacenters act as one carbon-efficient, grid-interactive resource.
This is a software systems role: you will be the technical integrator of the network. The 15 PhD projects span grid control, cooling, accelerators, forecasting, orchestration, and trust, and their results must connect into one coherent system. You will make that possible through interface-first integration: a shared interface schema, a co-simulation framework, and common benchmarks and datasets. The position does not involve hardware or embedded-electronics development.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your main task is to build and maintain the technical assets that connect the AEGIS research projects, and to turn them into publications. You will work directly with the coordinator, Prof. Paul Pop, and with all academic and industrial partners. You will also support the administration of AEGIS for 25% of your time, including meeting preparation and follow-up, deliverable tracking, and partner coordination.
The work includes:
- Defining and maintaining the AEGIS interface schema: components, signals, units, time scales, and operating envelopes, kept in a shared repository.
- Building the AEGIS co-simulation framework: a Python time-step simulator where partner models plug in through simple adapters, trace replay, or FMI co-simulation.
- Packaging benchmarks, scenarios, and datasets as versioned, citable artifacts, and running integration sprints at the network's training schools.
- Leading and co-authoring the cross-cutting publications, including a state-of-the-art and challenges paper, the AEGIS reference architecture, and the simulation framework.
- Co-supervising MSc and PhD students when this fits the project and your career plans.
The integration role puts you at the center of the network: you will publish with top researchers across AEGIS, and the shared artifacts give you collaborations, and thus papers, with most of the 15 PhD projects and 10 partner organizations.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
We are looking for a person with:
- A PhD in computer science or a related field, with a software systems profile: distributed systems, cloud or edge computing, simulation, digital twins, model-based engineering, or performance and energy modeling.
- Strong software engineering skills: you design APIs and schemas, build tools that others use, and integrate heterogeneous components. Experience with co-simulation, FMI/Modelica, or energy-system modeling is a plus.
- Experience writing synthesis texts: you can turn input from several contributors into one coherent paper or architecture document.
- Independent execution: you turn goals into plans, follow up on missing inputs, and finish what you start.

Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE) is one of the research sections at DTU Compute. We develop methods and tools for distributed embedded and cyber-physical systems, with emphasis on timing, safety, dependability, optimization, and real-time communication.
DTU Compute – Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science – is an internationally recognised academic environment with over 400 employees and 10 research sections. We broadly cover digital technologies within mathematics, data science, computer science, and computer engineering, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, internet of things (IoT), chip design, cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, social networks, fairness, and data ethics. Our research is rooted in basic research and centres on mathematical models of the physical and virtual world, as a basis for the analysis, design, and implementation of complex systems. We focus on ensuring that our research results contribute to creating a better society by supporting areas such as health, green transition, energy supply, and life science. We collaborate with universities, public and private organisations, and companies in Denmark and abroad, and through DTU’s startup ecosystem, we encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. We have a strong ethical, human, and sustainable approach that ensures integrity in our work. Therefore, we strive for and take responsibility for driving the democratisation of digital technologies, so that everyone has the opportunity to actively participate in the development, and we ensure a continued open, democratic, and inclusive society for the benefit of all. At DTU Compute, we value diversity, inclusion, and a flexible work-life balance.
