Staff Scientist (AC-TAP) in Biomolecular Sciences at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent staff scientist to support our efforts in research, student supervision and teaching on various projects in molecular biology and protein science. The position is open from January 1st, 2027.

Our research
You will be employed in the section for Biomolecular Sciences (BMS), which harbors 12 independent research groups. Research in the section covers a range of fundamental protein biomolecular topics primarily investigated in a cellular context. Techniques include NMR spectroscopy, computational biology, protein design and sophisticated directed evolution selection systems. You will be associated with two of the BMS research groups.

In the Hartmann-Petersen lab, the group investigates how cells maintain protein homeostasis through the protein quality control (PQC) system and how defects in these pathways contribute to disease. Research activities combine molecular genetics, functional genomics, and advanced high-throughput technologies to dissect the mechanisms governing protein folding, degradation, and cellular stress responses. A central focus is the development and application of Deep Mutational Scanning (DMS) to systematically characterize the functional consequences of genetic variation at scale. By integrating DMS with genome-wide CRISPR screening and other multiplexed assays, the group aims to uncover sequence–function relationships, identify determinants of protein stability and degradation, and map the cellular pathways that influence variant effects. This work provides fundamental insights into PQC networks and contributes to improved interpretation of human genetic variation in health and disease.

In the Ellgaard lab, the focus is on the structure, function and evolution of newly discovered animal toxins from a variety of venomous animals. To produce these peptide toxins, the group has developed – and continue to further improve – specialized systems for expression of disulfide-rich proteins in E. coli . Upon purification, we employ the purified toxin in specialized assays to test for activity and seek to determine their structures. Ultimately, the goal is to discover new toxin structures that can be explored as drug leads and biotechnological tools, for instance as bioinsecticides.

Your job
Your work will include a variety of both basic and advanced methodologies founded in molecular biology and protein chemistry. The role requires close collaboration with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds, integrating expertise from molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and related fields.

Beyond your primary projects, you will support ongoing research activities in the two groups on an ad hoc basis, contributing technical expertise, troubleshooting, and experimental development where needed. You will also help disseminate knowledge within the labs and the section by sharing best practices, training colleagues and students, and fostering a collaborative learning environment. Administrative tasks related to purchase, lab-safety, and chemical waste handling will also be part of your responsibilities.  Finally, you will organize and participate in lab course teaching for undergraduate students.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic staff scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills

• You have an MSc or PhD degree in Biochemistry or a related area.
• You have documented experience in several of the following areas:
  • Protein expression in E. coli
  • Protein purification using various chromatography methods
  • Methods for protein handling and analysis, such as SDS-PAGE and Western blotting
  • Bioinformatics and structural biology
  • Molecular cloning
  • Tissue culture of established cell lines
  • Knowledge of flow cytometry or FACS
  • High throughput screening technologies
• You have proven an ability to plan and execute a research project in the lab.
• Good English skills, written and spoken.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the Department of Biology, Ole Maaløes Vej 5, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and access to state-of-the-art facilities for sequencing and cell sorting, as well as protein production.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a permanent contract. The starting date is January 1st, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 18.07 % to your pension fund.
