CLOUD, SAAS & ESTATE COST AT SHINE

Shine runs a multi-million-a-year technology cost base: AWS, GCP and Azure, a large SaaS portfolio, and an on-premises estate that arrived through acquisitions — Kyndryl-operated infrastructure, Nutanix, Citrix and VMware included. Today nobody owns that cost base end to end. Attribution is partial, commitments are made without a full picture, and every product lifecycle decision — keep, move, or end — is argued without defensible numbers on the table. Infrastructure & IT is changing that. Spending well means knowing where the company is actually going: products that end must actually end, long-term products are where investment concentrates, and for every open decision we bring the numbers — what it costs to keep, what it costs to move, what it saves to end. This role is where those numbers come from, and where cost stops being a quarterly surprise and becomes a first-class, automated signal in how the estate is run. This is a senior individual contributor role with real ownership. The direction — one legible, shrinking, well-understood estate — is set; how cost visibility, investigation and automation make it real is substantially on you.

YOUR ROLE AS A FINOPS ENGINEER

What you own Cost visibility across the whole base, end to end. Cloud, SaaS and on-premises in one picture: attribution built into how the foundation is defined (tagging and allocation as code in the Terraform modules, not spreadsheets after the fact), SaaS spend tracked per tool and per owning team, and the acquired on-prem estate brought into the same view rather than left as a line item nobody can explain. The numbers behind every lifecycle decision. When a product's future is decided, you own the keep/move/end analysis: what it costs to run where it is, what migration costs, what a true sunset saves. Your numbers are what make retirement fundable and commitment planning safe. Cost automation, built with AI. Reporting, anomaly detection, investigation and forecasting built as automated pipelines — using AI tooling as a working instrument, not a demo. If a cost question has to be answered by hand twice, automating it is your job. Deep investigation, on demand. When Finance, a tribe lead, or leadership asks why a number moved, you can take it apart to the driver — service, workload, contract, or licence — and come back with an answer that holds up. Granular when it matters; we do not optimize for bolts. What you'll do day-to-day

• Build and maintain the attribution layer hands-on: tagging standards and allocation rules as code in the Terraform module library, cost data pipelines, showback with Finance per tribe and per product.
• Bring the SaaS portfolio under management — one inventory of tools, owners, contracts, renewal dates and per-seat cost, with each team seeing its own bill.
• Extend the same visibility over the on-premises estate: Kyndryl contracts, Nutanix, Citrix and VMware licensing and capacity, mapped to the products that depend on them and to their lifecycle dates.
• Produce the keep/move/end numbers for open product lifecycle decisions, and keep them current as decisions firm up.
• Automate reporting and anomaly detection with AI-assisted tooling — dashboards that answer questions before they're asked, alerts on spend that moves without a reason.
• Prepare the commitment strategy: unit economics per cloud, a committed-spend baseline that respects the retirement plan, and the analysis behind the hosting strategy decision — so that when the lifecycle decisions are final, the commitment cycle is ready to execute, not starting from scratch.
• Work with Finance on the cost-per-unit-of-delivery measure and the quarterly cost presentation to tribes — one definition, one number.
• Investigate specific cost questions raised by teams and leadership, in detail, and turn recurring questions into automated answers.

ABOUT YOU

Must-have

• 5+ years in FinOps, cloud cost engineering, or infrastructure engineering with substantial cost ownership — you've operated a real cost base, not just read the billing console
• Hands-on cloud fluency on at least one of AWS, GCP or Azure, with working knowledge of the others' billing and commitment models (CUDs, savings plans, reservations, enterprise agreements)
• Engineering-grade automation skills: you build pipelines, write code against billing and licensing APIs, and treat attribution as configuration in version control — comfortable working in Terraform, not around it
• Practical use of AI tooling in your own work — for analysis, report generation, investigation — with judgment about where it's dependable and where it isn't
• Experience making cost legible to non-specialists: showback or chargeback, unit economics, presentations to finance and engineering leadership that led to decisions
• Comfort with incomplete data and inherited mess — you can build a defensible picture from partial sources and state clearly what's known, estimated, and unknown
• Delivery attitude: you ship a working v1 of the cost picture and improve it, rather than waiting for perfect data that never arrives

Strong plus

• SaaS spend management at portfolio scale: licence optimization, renewal negotiation support, shadow-IT discovery
• On-premises and hybrid cost experience: outsourced infrastructure contracts (e.g. Kyndryl or similar), virtualization licensing (VMware, Citrix, Nutanix), data-centre unit economics
• Experience supporting a migration or consolidation program with cost analysis — you know what keep/move/end numbers look like when they're actually used
• FinOps Foundation certification or equivalent practice familiarity
• Background in regulated industries (fintech, accounting, banking)
• Experience in a post-acquisition environment where multiple estates were brought under one view

HOW WE MEASURE SUCCESS

Visibility

• Cost attribution coverage across cloud, SaaS and on-prem — trending toward 100%, with unattributed spend held under 5%
• Inventory of the SaaS portfolio and on-prem contracts: complete, current, and owned
• Time to answer a cost question — trending down, because the answer is increasingly automated

Decisions

• Keep/move/end numbers delivered for every open lifecycle decision, on time and defensible
• The cost-per-unit-of-delivery measure defined and baselined with Finance
• Commitment strategy ready when lifecycle decisions land — savings captured against a baseline that respects the retirement plan, not despite it

Trust

• Finance and tribe leads use your numbers without re-deriving them
• Qualitative signal: teams bring you cost questions early, rather than discovering the answer at quarter close

WHAT THIS IS NOT

This is not a procurement role, a controller role, or a slideware role. It's not penny-hunting: we report and investigate in detail, but we don't optimize for bolts — the leverage is in attribution, lifecycle decisions, commitments and the SaaS portfolio, not in shaving cents off individual workloads. It's also not a role where savings are your burden alone. Retirement and commitment decisions are made by product and leadership with the numbers you provide; your part is making the cost base so legible, and the numbers so defensible, that the right decision becomes the obvious one.
