Tenure Track Assistant Professorship or Associate Professorship in Science and Technology Studies and critical digital infrastructures at the IT University of Copenhagen
The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position in STS and Critical Digital Infrastructures starting in January or soon thereafter.
We invite applicants who want to contribute to the IT University's vision of creating and sharing knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity.
Job description
It is increasingly necessary to conduct research and teaching that addresses the digital systems that underpin social life and the everyday function of society. With this position, we invite applicants who work on such 'critical infrastructures'. Studies of critical infrastructures may deal with how they are negotiated, their complexity, practical accomplishments and effects, inherent values, and implications for justice, responsibility and legitimacy.
The successful applicant will be hired in the Technologies in Practice Research Section (TIP), which is one of Scandinavia’s leading research groups in STS. Research in TiP focuses on many different empirical areas impacted by digitalization such as green transition, the digital welfare state, education, policework, social work and much more. The group presently consists of 10 permanent staff and about 30 people in other positions and career stages. TiP offers a lively research environment with weekly brown-bag lunch seminars and collective writing sessions as well as half-yearly retreats and research days. Research on critical digital infrastructures in TIP would be expected to be characterized by its focus on the interplay between human, social and technical aspects of infrastructures and on infrastructures as a sociotechnical matter of process, transformation and experimentation.
The applicants are expected to have a research and teaching record in STS or neighboring fields, such as the anthropology of infrastructure. The applicant’s research is expected to be grounded in place and people through qualitative and empirically driven, e.g. it is ethnographic or practice focused. The applicant’s approach can be rooted in interpretative, critical, qualitative, or in more experimental approaches to/with digital devices and systems. The candidate is expected to mainly contribute with teaching and supervision to the MSc programme in Digital Innovation and Management, The Bachelor programme in Global Business Informatics or the part-time programme in IT-Management but may also contribute to other teaching areas at the ITU: Design and Computer/data science. Research and teaching in STS and critical infrastructures contribute to ITU’s goal of understanding and innovating digital technologies ways that deeply impact society. The successful candidate is also expected to be engaged with the broader multi-disciplinary research environment at ITU
Research areas could include (not an exclusive list):
- Critical digital systems, relationalities, dependencies and vulnerabilities thereof
- Cyber- and Information security, qualitatively and critically approached
- Critical environmental, democratic, educational or societal digital infrastructures
- Data, AI, or digital phenomena as critical devices, systems or platforms e.g. in organizational settings
